AllthingsSorcery is back after a short summer break. This time Ewout shows us how to have infinite good times in the Realm!
Hi, I’m Ewout and I started playing Sorcery in early 2024 with Beta. I fell in love with the game for it’s beautiful fantasy artwork and unique gameplay that made me want to learn more about it. I love building decks with unexpected strategies that show what this game is capable of, even if those aren’t always the best. If me and my opponent walk away from a game with a new story to tell then it doesn’t matter who won. And no game is better at achieving that than Sorcery.
P.s. If you meet Ewout at and event, ask him about his Bors collection!
We’re only 3 sets deep in Sorcery’s cardpool but there are already a couple ways to do infinite loops. Some see competitive play but most are quite niche as they require a lot of pieces and setup.
I’ve compiled some of them here for you, listing them and adding the number of combo pieces required. So strap in and let’s explore the wonderful world of infinite loops in Sorcery!
Kythera Chaos
Chaoswish on first read does not seem like a card that could go infinite, unless by some extremely unlikely random chance you somehow keep wishing for another Chaoswish.
Luckily we can do just that with Kythera Mechanism! We control all our random outcomes which includies the random spell we get with Chaoswish. And now you can keep wishing for Chaoswish each copy, creating an endless loop.
Your opponent gets a random spell each time too if they so desire! but it should not matter. If you start this loop with either your avatar or a spellcaster equipped with a Ring of Morrigan near the enemy avatar you can deal them 1 damage with each copy cast, putting them at Death’s Door. Then for your last spell of the chaosloop choose Courtesan Thais to finish them off on their own turn and crown yourself master of Chaos!
Cards required:
– Chaoswish
– Kythera Mechanism
The Corrupted Town Priest
Town priest is a simple card. It reads: “Genesis → Return target adjacent Evil minion to its owner’s hand.”
It’s a pretty flavourful card, the priest repelling the evil that’s haunting the town and bringing peace back to it’s inhabitants. Now what would happen if the priest itself is evil? Well, he’d be able to return himself back to hand as there is no “other” minion clause in it’s rules text. And playing the Corruptor as our avatar makes this possible, turning all our Mortals into Undead.
This is the basis of this simple loop: Play Town priest, have him return himself back to hand. To make this infinite however, we need to find a way to make this not cost mana, and the answer to that is actually in the Town Priest’s name: Town.
Town is an exceptional site that reads: “Exceptional minions cost 1 less to cast to this site.” So by having Town as a site we can keep playing Town Priest over and over again, creating an infinite loop!
Just like the Chaoswish loop a Ring of Morrigan is your finisher of choice, dealing one damage each time you make the Town Priest kick himself out of Town.
Cards required:
– Town Priest
– Town
– Corruptor
Lady Iseult's Wizard Battle
Lady Iseult looks like a broken card and that’s because she is. Not to get your minions back to hand if your opponent deals with them but rather for enabling some nasty loops.
Her ability to return our nearby allied minions to hand makes for a few possible infinites but for the easiest you just need two One-shot Wizards and two Hamlets.
Just like the Town Priest loop we are using a site that will lower our combo pieces to 0 mana when played there but this time we use Hamlet, the ordinary version of Town. Place the two Hamlets next to each other and have Lady Iseult be near them. Play the first One-shot Wizard on Hamlet for free, then play the second one on the other site and use it’s Genesis ability to shoot a projectile for one damage and make it hit the first wizard.
This will kill the first wizard and Lady Iseult will return it back to hand. Now you can replay it and keep looping the wizards in a neverending battle of wizardy.
Again, you can use the Ring of Morrigan as a payoff for this loop or you can get creative with it. If one Hamlet is in a straight line in front of the enemy avatar you don’t have to be near them to make this loop fatal. When you cast your second One-shot Wizard you can use the Ring of Morrigan trigger to deal one damage to the first one. That way when the second one enters you can use it’s projectile to hit the enemy avatar and get them to death’s door from across the board!
This way you can replace one of the wizards with any other 1-cost 1-power ordinary. Like a Grain Sparrow if you want some life or Carrion Beetles to empty your opponent’s cemetery.
But what if you’re not happy with this? You want more? There’s also a way to get infinite mana! Have Homecoming and Horn of Caerleon there to tap your ordinary minons for mana before returning them to your hand.
Cards required:
– Lady Iseult
– One-shot Wizard x2
– Hamlet x2
“Sharks are very territorial and do not appreciate Finwives in their waters.”
Fishfight
A card beloved by many is Arthurian Legend’s Finwife. if you can get her close to the enemy avatar she provides 2 mana which happens to be exactly her mana cost! You can probably see where this is going, another Lady Iseult loop. But this time her 2 power prevents us from just looping her with Ring of Morrigan as she will survive the 1 damage.
So for this we’re looking at another fish: the Giant Shark. Sharks are very territorial and do no appreciate Finwives in their waters. So whenever she is summoned in the Shark’s body of water the Shark will fight her, killing her and Lady Iseult returns her to our hand!
But it’s not that easy because our Finwife is fiesty and fights back, dealing 2 damage to the Giant Shark. So after a couple of loops our Shark would die and it would not be infinite.
So what we need next is a witch to help our Shark stay healthy. By having Wicked Witch in the equation our minions will have 2 less power! This way our shark can still eat some delicious Finwives while they are unable to fight back.
This loop is pretty tricky to pull of as you need an allied water site close to the enemy avatar to play Finwife but the look on their face when you do so is worth every lost game.
If you can manage to flood a Hamlet and have the enemy avatar be near it this loop will net you infinite mana as well, reducing the cost to play Finwife to 1.
Cards required:
– Lady Iseult
– Finwife
– Giant Shark
– Wicked Witch
Vivien the Changeling
Vivien the Enchantress is a weird card. Unlike her name suggests she’s not that good in an Enchantress deck but luckily for us she’s perfect as a combo piece!
She has all abilities of spellcasters on the field but looking at all minion spellcasters there’s not a way to go infinite with her. So let’s make our own spellcasters. Enter: Standing Stones.
Standing Stones is a site that sees zero play and most people have never even seen the card played. But it is exactly what we need to give our Vivien all the fun abilies that will make your opponent’s head hurt.
The first step is to make her cost 0 mana. We do this by playing a Keening Banshee on the Standing Stones. Hopefully for 0 mana if you had a mortal die this turn, otherwise it won’t work.
This way Vivien also costs 0 mana as Keening Banshee is a spellcaster with a printed ability that allows it to be cast for free. And to be able to loop Vivien we play a Fey Changeling on Standing Stones.
Now Vivien reads:
May be cast for 0 if an allied Mortal died this turn.
May be summoned to any site.
Genesis → You may return a minion here to its owners hand.
So we can cast her anywhere for free and choose to return herself to our hand, making this an infinite loop. If you want to spice things up you can add:
– Alvalinne Dryads on the Standing Stones for infinite mana
– One-shot Wizard on the Standing Stones for infinite damage
– Apprentice Wizard for infinite card draw
– Azuridge Caravan on Standing Stones to make her a beast and make her searchable with Assorted Animals
Cards required:
– Vivien the Enchantress
– Standing Stones
– Keening Banshee
– Fey Changeling
Winning with a minion entering loop
As mentioned before in this article, Ring of Morrigan is your weapon of choice to put your opponent on Death’s Door with one of these loops. But if you don’t want to wait another turn to finish your opponent off you can try this instead:
The False Idol & Winter Nymph insta-win
By playing a Winter Nyph and False Idol near your combo site you’ll have your minions enter and become tapped, triggering False Idol every time you go trough your loop. This way you can force your opponent to draw their entire deck, winning the game that same turn because your opponent attempts to draw a card from an empty deck. A pretty stylish way to win!
“The next combo will end friendships so try it at your own risk!”
Craving a Candlemassacre
There’s one more loop to talk about, but this one is different. This will not end the game right away but will end your friendships so try this out at your own risk!
Many people have heard about the Candlemas Monks and Crave Golem deck but few dare to pilot it. I shall now explain this evil loop for education purposes only so you can be aware of what damage it can cause.
Candlemas Monks is a pretty simple card: “Deathrite → Proceed to the end phase.”
It’s a card that discourages your opponent from attacking, in fear of ending their turn early when you block with them. It looks fair as there should not be a way to have the deathrite trigger without your opponent having any control over it.
But that’s where Crave Golem comes in. A weird automaton with an unsatiable hunger which reads: “At the start of each player’s turn, Crave Golem attacks a random minion within its range of motion, or takes a step toward the closest minion if it can’t.”
So by having these two cards in play (and the Candlemass Monks being the only nearby minion) the Golem will attack and kill the Candlemas Monks at the start of your opponents turn, completely preventing them from taking any actions or playing cards!
As if this wasn’t bad enough, there’s a way to make this an infinite loop by returning the monks from our graveyard every turn. Dame Britomart is able to get back our monks turn after turn, turning Sorcery into a single-player game and your opponent into a spectator of their own demise.
Luckily for them it is not that easy. Your Crave Golem could decide to randomly attack a different minion or the Dame Britomart which should always be nearby to get the monks back. A Kythera Mechanism fixes this issue so there’s no more randomness.
The last thing we need to fix is the golem’s hunger: at the beginning of our turn he wants to attack a minion and that is not optional. The only minion nearby should be Dame Britomart but her 3 power cleans up the Crave Golem quite nicely. So to prevent our golem dying we either give it one of Gothics +1 power spellcaster artifacts or have a Golden Harp to lower the damage dealt by Dame Britomart to the golem.
And there you have it: every time your opponents turn starts the Crave Golem will eat it’s healthy breakfast of Candlemas Monks and your opponent’s turn abruptly ends. Then during your turn the golem will butt heads with Dame Britomart but they both survive and she will prepare next turns breakfast by attacking an enemy site and getting the Candlemas Monks back.
Repeat until you are satisfied or your opponent has left the table.
Cards required:
– Candlemas Monks
– Crave Golem
– Dame Britomart
– Kythera Mechanism
– Golden Harp / +1 power artifact
So that's it for infinite loops in Sorcery, at least the ones I know of. Now build a deck with one of these combos and surprise your friends with some of these crazy interactions!
